Point Of Law Makes Melbourne Cup History as Maher Lands Extraordinary 1-2-3

The 2026 Melbourne Cup delivered one of those results that will be talked about for years. Point Of Law swept to a commanding victory at Flemington, giving jockey Ethan Brown his first Melbourne Cup and trainer Ciaron Maher a remarkable second success in Australia’s most famous race.

A dominant Cup winner

Sent off the $7 favourite, Point Of Law justified the confidence in emphatic style. Royal Supremacy ensured there was no hiding place by opening up a huge advantage during the race, but when the field turned for home the favourite began to close. Brown produced Point Of Law at exactly the right moment and the lightly raced colt powered clear to score by 3¾ lengths.

Behind him came stablemates Zahrann and Juja Kibo, completing an astonishing first, second and third for Maher. In 166 runnings of the Melbourne Cup, no trainer had previously prepared the trifecta.

From Geelong to Flemington

Point Of Law arrived in Australia with a fascinating profile. Formerly raced by His Majesty The King, the son of Frankel had shown his staying potential in Britain before being purchased for Maher’s Australian clients. His first Australian start came in the Geelong Cup, where victory secured the golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup.

Just 13 days later he completed the Geelong Cup–Melbourne Cup double, joining Media Puzzle, Americain and Dunaden among the horses to achieve that feat this century. Even more remarkably, the Melbourne Cup was only the sixth race of Point Of Law’s career, making him the most lightly raced modern-era winner of the great race.

A special victory for Ethan Brown

The result also carried an emotional story for Ethan Brown. The 27-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries in a Flemington fall in March 2023 and at one stage considered whether he would ride again. His return has developed into an outstanding comeback, and victory in the Melbourne Cup on the same racecourse provided a remarkable high point.

Maher rewrites the record books

Maher saddled seven runners in the Cup, but even that numerical strength could hardly have prepared racing fans for the finish. Point Of Law led home Zahrann and Juja Kibo to give the champion trainer a clean sweep of the podium and a place in Melbourne Cup history that may never be repeated.

The Guvnor’s View

For me, the most exciting part of this result is how much improvement Point Of Law may still have ahead of him. Six career starts is almost nothing for a stayer asked to win a Melbourne Cup, yet he handled the occasion, the 3200 metres and a genuinely testing race like a seasoned top-class horse. The Geelong Cup told us he was very good; Flemington suggested he could be exceptional.

The final result — Point Of Law first, Zahrann second and Juja Kibo third — belongs in the Melbourne Cup record books. A brilliant young stayer, an extraordinary training performance and an unforgettable comeback story for Ethan Brown. The 2026 Cup had the lot.
